Sedella

Sedella is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain.

The municipality is situated approximately 54 kilometres from the provincial capital of Málaga, 23 from Vélez-Málaga and 8 from Canillas de Aceituno. It has a population of approximately 700 residents. The natives are called Sedellanos. The Patron Saint is St Andrew the Apostle. The village church has a bell tower dating back to Moorish time. Other signs of Moorish origin can also be found in one of the last bastions of the Moors. Sedella is also the Center for the Nature Park of Sierra Tejeda and Almijara with a Visitor Centre. The annual summer fiesta is in honour of the Virgin Mary of Esperanza (Hope).

The village is located just 700 meters from the finca in the southern part of Spain, Andalucia and has approximately 700 inhabitants. Shopping in Sedella is limited, but offers a pharmacy, hairdresser, 2 grocery stores, 3 restaurants and 2 bars.

Sedella is an old traditional village. Here you can still see men with loaded mules walking through the streets while the goats are passing through. The priest blesses the animals in the city once a year.

In Sedella there are faucets where spring water runs all year round and where the mule gets a well earned drink after a hard day’s work.

Holidays / Parties

Fiesta de San Antonio – According to the traditions, the priest blesses horses, mules – yes, all animals after the fair. The city’s villagers go marching behind the effigies of local saints. It will be held on the weekend closest to January 17th.

Carnival – In mid February.

Easter – March / April with various shows and festivities.

La Romeria – Last week in May. Everyone in town takes their picnic basket and walks up to the picnic spot near the gribber’s reservoir. There are benches and barbecues and everyone grills and eats together. There are horses with riders and one can take a ride.

Townfestival – During the first week of August. Goods usually lasts for 3 days. A well-known group plays and there is also flamenco and disco and a small market and a lot of competitions, by horse and by bike. It all ends with a huge free paella for the whole village.

Market day in Sedella – Monday. This is a very small market, with few stalls.

Interesting Places

La Casa Torreón – XVI century. With mudéjar tower and Arabic decor. The church San Andrés From the XVI century.

Natural Park “La Rahige” – A few miles from the village, in the direction of Canillas de Aceituna. The park is an ideal place for nature lovers. The park has several natural pools and smaller waterfalls. There are benches and BBQ’s for picnics. However, BBQ’s are not allowed in summer due to fire hazard. Here the spring water runs free throughout the year.

Natural Park – Sierra Tejeda and Sierra Almijara – Such as Includes La Maroma, the highest point of Andalusia. Hiking or mountain biking – If you are hiking or mountain biking, Sedella and surrounding area are the place to go. There are high mountain peaks, valleys, nature parks, gribber’s reservoir and small picknick places, streams and waterfalls. Eg. Can you walk all the way up to Maroma’s top where the view is outstanding. The ride can be done in one day depending on the temperament and abilities. Book with suggestions for walks can be found in the library. In addition, phone numbers of local guides, if desired.

In the area there are many small white cozy villages and the coast is only 40 minutes from Sedella. There are several small coves and beaches.

Restaurante – Bar El Chiringuito – The local place for the locals. It’s Rafa and his mother who makes the food and the food is really good food. There is always the day’s lunch menu which is very reasonable.
